Free Pattern: Egg Bowl Photography Prop

This is a photo prop that stretches around baby, either on his back with legs sticking out or on his side.  The basic idea: make a flat circle, build up the sides, add a decorative edge.  I used an up-and-down stitch on the sides and a slip-stitch edging.  You could easily substitute another stitch design for the sides or another edging to make it unique.

If you're using another weight of yarn, the bowl bottom should be about 16" when stretched.  Be sure to crochet loosely, whatever yarn you use, because this should be a stretchy prop.

Supplies:
Not quite 1 skein medium 4 yarn
(I used Yarn Bee Andes Alpaca Cinnamon  (FYI - this turned out fuzzier than I wanted. I probably will go with something else next time.))
Size 6mm (J/10) hook

Abbreviations:
Ch - chain
Dc - double crochet
Sl st - slip stitch
Sc - single crochet

Instructions:
Bottom:
Round 1: Magic ring, ch 3.  12 dc.  Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3.
Round 2: Ch 3. 2 dc in each dc around.  (24 dc)  Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3.
Round 3: Ch 3. *2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc.  Repeat from * around.  (36 dc)  Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3.
Round 4: Ch 3. *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 2 dc.  Repeat from * around.  (48 dc)  Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3.
Round 5: Ch 3. *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 3 dc. Repeat from * around. (60 dc)   Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3.
Round 6: Ch 3. *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 4 dc. Repeat from * around. (72 dc)  Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3.
Round 7: Ch 3. *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 5 dc. Repeat from * around. (84 dc)  Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3.
Round 8: Ch 3. *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 6 dc. Repeat from * around. (96 dc)  Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3.

Sides:
Round 9: Ch 1. Alternate [sc, dc] in each dc around.   Join to ch.
Round 10: Ch 3.  Alternate [dc, sc] in each st around.  Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3.
Rounds 11-12: Repeat Rounds 9-10

Edging:
Round 13: Ch 1. Loosely sl st around in back loops only.  (Check to make sure you can still stretch it.  If not, go back and do it more loosely.)  Join to ch.
Round 14-15: Ch 1, turn. Loosely sl st around in back loops only.  Join to ch.  At the end of Round 15, finish off.  Weave in ends.
(Note: If your stitches are facing inside the bowl, add a Round 16.)

  4. I love your patterns! I just have a quick question though! I just finished round 8 and I am confused about your measurements. From what point to what point should be 16 inches because straight across mine is only 10, but half of the circumference is 16... A little help would be great!! Thanks!

  7. I just finished round 11 and it doesn't look like it will be finished if 4 rows. There is also a ripple in the bottom circle which will not lie flat.
